The Holy Saturday Commemoration

Joseph Haydn

Joseph Haydn

It has become an annual tradition in Beulah to hold a meditative seasonal event on Holy Saturday, the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

This is traditionally a day without church services.  Being suspended between the grim drama of the crucifixion and the inexplicable joy of the resurrection, it seemed to be uniquely suited to a concert: one  tied to the time of year and the feelings of the occasions surrounding it, grounded in locality but aware of the wider context.

Every other year there is a complete string quartet performance of The Seven Last Words of Christ, by Haydn, with interpolations of literature, visual art or dance, for example; and in intervening years a more free-form collation of appropriate material.

This year of 2014 is one for the complete Haydn. It seemed to us that it would be especially apposite to commemorate the year 1914 and to keep the focus local, personal and narrative. We have a photographic slide show, some artefacts from the trenches, stories from local people caught up in the global conflict and contributions from young people.

Come and join us for a concert with a difference. If you have anything to bring and share then there is still time. Contact us at
